What got you interested in comics? Any cartoonists that you look up to?
Unah: I have always wanted to be a storyteller, I love getting enthralled in a tall tale and spinning them. As a dyslexic youth, reading a huge novella wasn’t very easy for me and so I turned to comics which only fueled my love of art and creative expression. I continue to love comics today because it is such a good way to solidly show someone what is inside your head and share a whole world you created. I love the experience of reading a printed comic but webcomics are also a large part of my comic experience and life in general. Just a few cartoonists who majorly influenced my love of comics and style in general are Sam Bosma, Noelle Stevenson, Jake Wyatt, Minna Sundberg, and Andrew McLean.
Can you tell us a little about your comic? How does it speak to the theme of the anthology (uncharted territory/unversed)?
Unah: My comic is quiet with subtly themes of battling conformity and inner fears exploring both unversed physical and emotional territory. This Story begins with breaking out of a monotonous pattern to take on a journey over land and through quiet emotional turmoil to ends with crossing over a wall, into the unknown.
What was the inspiration behind your story?
Unah: I think feeling like you’re stuck is a pretty common feeling and I wanted to try and tell a story about getting unstuck and feeling alone but knowing that it will get better if you keep going. On top of that, I also wanted to try my hand at a more serious story because my other stories are generally more comical.
What challenges arose during the course of this project? Takeaways?
Unah: Personally, I have a hard time with this story because it is so serious and I am not generally a very serious person. Halfway through I fell out of love with the idea entirely but by just continuing to work it I’ve found a good space and am excited about this story again. I think it’s important to keep working on something because it is almost always going to get worse before it gets beautiful.
Can we expect more comics beyond this project? Where can we find more of your work?
Unah: Yes definitely, I enjoy making comics (most of the time) and although it is really hard work, when it’s all said and done the finished product definitely feels worth the work. These future comics will live with my handle is @denightsdelights on instagram and tumblr.
